I took the initiative of inviting everyone around a post-it note to determine together the principle of the game.
2. Game design
The Scientific Game Jam 2019 invites creators and scientific researchers to design a game within 42 hours. There, I met Ugo Nani, a glacio-seismology researcher in the Alps.
For his thesis, he collects data on glaciers to predict their movement. Glaciers have a layer of water at their base that acts as a lubricant, causing them to move approximately 50cm per day. The more water there is, the faster the glacier moves. To determine this movement, Ugo listens to the seismic vibrations of the water within the glacier to predict their future evolution.
So, we built an experiment around this phenomenon, using anticipation as a gameplay mechanic: players listen to the vibrations of the glacier to predict the path to take.
3. Level design
I then focused on the level design to create an experience where the sense of difficulty gradually increases, then gently subsides, leaving players with a feeling of wonder.
4. Art Direction
I was also responsible for designing the art direction, drawing inspiration from the "flat-design" style of illustrator Marie-Laure Cruschi (alias Cruschiform).
This technique enabled me to efficiently create minimalist landscapes with a sense of depth.
5. 1rst Prize
This prototype won the first prize, "Pixel d'Or," at the fifth Scientific Game Jam in Grenoble, held from March 15 to 17, 2019. The event was organized by the Grenoble Alpes University Community, in partnership with La Casemate (CCSTI) and financially supported by the Idex Grenoble Alpes University.
Winning this prize enabled me to participate in a round table on science and video games at the NIMS forum in Grenoble.
